Specifically designed to help maintain a proper liver function, Silymarin, from Vitobest®, bases its efficacy on the use of silymarin, a standardized extract at 80% that is extracted from the seeds of milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Clinical studies show the beneficial effect of this plant species in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, so it has been suggested that it may have antioxidant activity and hepatoprotective effect in several viruses1.
For decades this species has been used in Europe in the form of monophytotherapies (with a single plant) or as polyphytotherapies (mixture of plants) applied to liver discomfort. This is supported by the positive results obtained in different experimental models in animals and even in humans. The described activities are due to the flavolignans of silibinin (the main active component of silymarin), which act as antioxidant agents and free radical scavengers. They are also associated with antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activity2.
Other research mentions its benefits as a complement to standard therapy for the hepatitis C virus3, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (helps to decrease oxidative stress, insulin resistance, accumulation of fat in the liver and mitochondrial dysfunction)4.
